Oh how it pains me to do this...

I was so excited for the release of this figure, which made its deficiencies that much harder to take. On the plus side MP-36 is a very accurate representation of Megatron in both robot and alt modes, with good articulation and plenty of heft. He looks every bit the menacing, tyrannical bot you'd expect of the leader of the Decepticons. Unfortunately there are a number of avoidable issues that really take the shine off of things.

Firstly, the transformation is a pain. It's clever, but it's not intuitive or fun, which isn't something I say about Takara figures very often. However, the biggest problem with the transformation is that it damages the figure thanks to some unforgivable QC issues on Takara's part. The biggest of these is the propensity for the paint to just chip off of the figure seemingly at a glance. Want to attach the silencer to the gun barrel? Say goodbye to the paint and hello to unsightly scratches! On top of this my copy has numerous small chips and even dents, including one on the forehead of my favourite face sculpt, which means I can't display him with it. Additionally, the right shoulder on my copy is deformed, which makes it look odd in robot mode and hinders transformation.

It's such a pity that MP-36 suffers from these problems because it's such a good looking figure, packaged with a fantastic assortment of extras (4 interchangeable face plates with a range of expressions, a stock/silencer/scope for the alt mode, an energy mace, key to Vector Sigma and mind control headgear (from various the G1 episodes), and the damaged chest plate, sword and blaster from the movie). He also has a lot of back kibble and his Fusion Canon is read instead of purple, which is just poor attention to detail. That third-party companies have stepped up to resolve these issues (and indeed release KO versions of the figure that don't scratch) speaks volumes.

If you get a good copy and never plan to transform it, instead just displaying in a case, you'll probably be very happy. Personally I expected more for almost £200 and half wish I'd bought the Infinite Transformations version for a fraction of the cost... In summary, it looks great, but it's overpriced and has unforgivable defects.
